Things You Probably Did Not Know About Tile Flooring
A lot of people go for tile flooring because they believe that it is the easiest option to take care of. Tile floors have earned this reputation because they are perceived to be low-maintenance, easy to clean messes off them, and long-lasting. However, there are several other aspects that one should consider before choosing tiles as their flooring option. In this article, we will be looking at some of the things that you probably did not know about tiles.
There Are Three Categories of Floor Tiles
Floor tiles are generally made of three types of materials: natural stone, ceramic, and porcelain. Of the three, ceramic tiles are typically the least expensive and are almost entirely made of clay. Porcelain tiles, on the other hand, are a blend of feldspar which hardens into a substance with glass-like qualities when processed in a kiln and clay. Natural stone tiles are generally unprocessed and are carved out from Mother Nature’s handiwork – as a result, they tend to be more expensive than their counterparts.
Natural Stone Tile Floors are the Toughest to Take Care Of
Floor tiles made of materials like marble, travertine, and limestone require a bit more maintenance for them to remain in pristine condition. With these tiles, spills should be blotted up as soon as they happen and should be cleaned with low pH solutions that don’t contain lemon juice, vinegar, or that aren’t acidic. Citrus juice and abrasive substances such as sand can have a damaging effect on natural stone tiles.
Grout Isn’t Just an Accent Piece
A lot of people consider grout an excellent accent piece to their tiles, and that is it. However, that is not the real purpose of grout. While grout does an excellent job of giving your flooring a great finished look, it also protects your tiles. It tightly locks tiles together, protects them from scratching or chipping, and ensures that water does not penetrate through them as it could damage the material that’s used to adhere the tiles to the ground. Considering how vital grout is, give it the respect it deserves and always keep it looking great.
Thinset and Grout Are Two Different Things
While grout is used in-between tiles to protect them and to seal the floor, it is essential that you consider having your tile floor sealed to the ground with something known as thinset. Thinset is a cement-like material that’s thin and sticky when wet – which enables it to adhere tiles to the subfloor. Once it’s dried, it becomes a stiff, yet flexible substance. However, it is worth noting that it can be very hard, and even impossible, to remove it from tiles. Considering this, it is essential that you have a profession tiling company handle the task of installing tiles using thinset. Never, under any circumstances, mix grout and thinset.
You are Cleaning Your Tile Flooring Wrong
Washing a tile floor involves more than just cleaning your floor with a brush and warm water. Remaining dirt and debris could scratch your floor, leaving it looking dull. As such, it is essential that you take up proper tile floor cleaning techniques to maintain your Vancouver tile floor and increase its longevity. If possible, dry-sweep your floor every day to ensure no dirt or debris lingers. When mopping a tile floor, dry mop it with a micro-fiber cloth after you’ve washed it to pick up any residue and always remember to polish your floor.
You Don’t Have to Lay Down Your Tiles in A Checkerboard Pattern
While straight-laying is one of the simplest ways of laying down tiles, that doesn’t mean that you only stick to this option. There are tons of other ways to have tiles laid out. If you want to spruce things up a bit, then consider trying out something a bit complex like a laying your tiles at a diagonal to create a tile pattern that is at an angle. Alternatively, you could have your tiles brick-laid at an offset at every new row to create a brick wall pattern. There are far fancier options out there such as the herringbone or pinwheel pattern which create unique designs that will leave your floor looking amazing. However, it is worth noting that fancier tiling work takes a lot longer to lay down and could be quite expensive.
There Is Much You Can Do to Help Protect Your Grout
Grout plays a crucial role when it comes to the looks and longevity of your tiles. To keep it from cracking, getting excessively dirty, or chipping, consider having grout sealer applied on it – and the great thing is that some grout mixes have a sealer pre-mixed in them. If you end up with missing, chipped or cracked grout, it is best to clean the grout line out and replace it. This will help your tile flooring last a very long time.
